Gollings maps plans

- By ZANZEER SINGH

NEW Fiji 7s coach Ben Gollings will use the first month of his three-year term in Fiji to observe the 7s setup in the country and build relationships in a bid to blend into the Fijian culture.

The 41-year-old is no stranger to the country as he has been part of the Coral Coast 7s tournament as a player and ambassador on numerous occasions.

Gollings was in Dubai earlier last month to watch the Fiji 7s team in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

He said there was a lot happening within the sport, especially with majority of the Tokyo Olympics gold medal winners moving into the 15s code.

“It was very useful for me to be in Dubai to see the team and I know that it is very new look team,” Gollings said.

“There is a lot happening in Fiji rugby with a lot of players moving into the 15s arena and also overseas. It was a great opportunity to see these players play and compete. I think they did a great job. It is a big learning curve jumping into a big tournament.”

Gollings, a natural half back, represented the England 7s team from 2000 to 2011 making 70 appearances. He still holds the record for most points scored in the World Rugby Sevens Series with 2652 points.

“From my perspective, the first month in Fiji will be to get to know the people well and develop those relationships.

“It will be kind of observing a lot of what’s going on and how the training has been working.

“To develop that understanding so that I know where to press on in the early stages and develop that through the course of the next 12 months to three years.”
