Weightlifting Fiji completes certificate course
WEIGHTLIFTING Fiji (WF) has successfully conducted the first International Weightlifting Federation International L2 coaches certification in the Pacific.
The course was conducted by IWF coach educator and WF president Della Shaw, who is accredited to lecture in IWF’s L1 and L2 coaching certifications.
Those selected to sit the certification had earlier completed the Level 1 program in October, 2020.
There were six coaches from Kadavu, Serua, Suva, Levuka with one attending online from New Zealand. They completed the L2 course from
December 13 – 17.
The course focused on kinesiology, exercise prescription, faults and corrective measures, auxiliary lifts and exercises, and training programs. Other significant topics were weightlifting for children and adolescence (youth resistance training), coaching female athletes.
Practical sessions were run at the National Fitness Centre and were targeted specifically at corrective exercise and auxiliary exercises with the Suva Weightlifting Club being the practical athletes.
The program was officially opened by the chief executive officer of the
Fiji National Sports Commission, Peter Mazey, who highlighted the important roles of the coach in the development and spread of the sport nationwide.
Shaw thanked the IWF and the FNSC for their continued support in the development and establishment of clubs.
The newly certified coaches will begin to work with WF national development officer to take the sport throughout the country. WF life member and former president Vidhya Lakhan presented the certificate to the seven participants who passed their exams.
