PARENTS are being advised not to send their children to school if they are not feeling well, says Minister for Education Premila Kumar.

“We must all take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in our communities to keep our schools safe,” she said in a statement.

While wishing the students well ahead of the resumption of school today, Mrs Kumar said face-to-face learning was vital for the academic achievement, mental and physical health, and overall wellbeing of students and that by continuing to work together, a positive school experience for everyone could be ensured.

She said parents were being advised not to send their children to school if they were not feeling well and that students were expected to comply with COVID-safe measures introduced in school, including wearing masks.

“We must all take the necessary steps to reduce risk of COVID-19 in our communities to keep our schools safe.”

She said the ministry was aware that not all students had regular and reliable access to online learning tools during the school closure.

“As such, the return of students to school in January will provide them with the opportunity and resources to work closely with their teachers to successfully complete the requirements of the 2021 academic year before progressing to the next level.”

Mrs Kumar said the last term for 2021 would commence today for Years 8 to 13 to sit their National Examinations, and early childhood education (ECE) to Year

7 on Monday, January 10, to complete the remaining coverage and revisit concepts covered during remote learning in 2021 so that they were well-prepared to move to the next level in the new school year starting in April 2022.

She also said she hoped students had ample time to prepare themselves to return to school and tackle one of the most challenging terms.
