Villagers hit with flu-like symptoms

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

AN increasing number of sick people in villages of Cakaudrove has prevented parents from sending their children to school.

In villages along the coast of Natewa and Tunuloa, villagers have reported increased cases of flu-like symptoms and body aches.

Vusasivo Village headman Aselemo Banicau said many people are down with what could be the common cold and flu.

“A group of our villagers had attended a function in another village and returned home sick because some of those attending the same function travelled from Viti Levu,” he said.

“So some parents are concerned about the health condition of their children and prefer to keep them at home until everything clears.

“We have continued to advise those who are sick to stay indoors and do selfquarantine because we don’t want the whole village to suffer.”

Some parents in the same area said they were wary about sending their children back to school.

They said the escalating COVID cases reported in the North was a major cause for their concern.

Lote Saro, a well-known community worker along the coast of Natewa and Tunuloa in Cakaudrove, said not many students had returned to school.

“From our village in Nadavaci, only one student I know of has returned to school, while the rest are still at home simply because their parents are worried about their safety,” he said.

“We can’t blame these parents because there are a lot of sick people in the villages which also includes those who have come in from Viti Levu.

“The situation is quite difficult for many parents so we have just advised them to stay safe because that’s important,” Mr Saro added.
