Team Fiji ‘to do our best’

- By FILIPE MARAYAWA

TEAM Fiji chef de mission to the Pacific Mini Games Ajay Ballu says his message to the Fiji contingent is to do their best.

“I have spoken to them and I have urged them to do their best,” said Ballu.

“They have been chosen and selected to represent the country in that particular sport which means they are the best. We are not going on a holiday but we are on a mission to win medals. We need to perform and do our nation proud.”

Ballu said some sporting federations would use the mini games as a foundation for preparations towards the Commonwealth Games next month in the UK.

“I think weightlifting and athletics will use this as an opportunity to prepare their athletes for the Commonwealth Games.”

Ballu led the Fiji contingent yesterday as they presented their i-tatau to the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, at the State House in Nasese yesterday.

“When you represent the country, you are taking all our prayers, best wishes, support and everything to where you are going,” said Ratu Wiliame.

“You are going to tell a story of where you are from. I know that some of you faced hardships to be here in terms of training and other aspects. All those hardships have lead you here. You have our full support but the onus is on you to perform, to go out there and bring something back home.

“On behalf of the people of Fiji and your loved ones, I stand proud to wish you well on your trip to the Northern Marianas. Go strong.”

Team Fiji will send 94 officials and athletes in eight sports at the Pacific Mini Games in the Northern Marianas. They will leave on June 11 and are expected to return on June 26.
