THE Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League has confirmed that the curtain raiser match for the under-19 national finals will be a Vanua Levu selection team against a Viti Levu team.

FSSRL general secretary Taniela Vakamoce said the teams would compete for a challenge cup.

“At the moment we can say that there is a selection of 26 players,” said Vakamoce.

“There are nine schools (in the North) where we will be selecting players from and they are Navatu Secondary School, Savusavu Secondary School, Saint Bedes College, Uluivalili Secodary School, Naleba Sendary School, Vaturova Secondary School, Seaqaqa Secondary School, Dreketi Secondary School and Khalsa College.

“The final 20-member squad will be named before coming over to Suva for the curtainraiser match.”

STUDENTS from Namosi Secondary School took full advantage of the Suva Marathon Race in Pacific Harbour over the weekend.

The six students from the school will be taking part in the Suva Zone One long distance events next week and found an opportune time to test their abilities.

Student Iona Muloilagi, who will be participating at the Suva Zone One said, the event was a good time to test their training.

“Just part of our training to build up our strength as the Suva Zone One is coming up. From there we want to qualify for the Coca-Cola Games,” Muloilagi said.

“So it was a good exercise as we were able to compete with some very good runners.”

He added that just like any other athlete, they were waiting for their opportunity to get noticed so they can also fly the Fijian flag one day.

“We are trying our best to make the most of these events and hopefully we can get under the radar of some national coaches and we will be fortunate to represent the nation one day.”

The Suva Zone One will be held next Wednesday while the Suva Zone Two will be held next Thursday and Friday.
