THE Fiji Police Force crime detection rate currently stands at 69 per cent, a mere 1 per cent below the key performance indicator (KPI) target of 70 per cent.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aporosa Lutunauga said this during the Fiji Police Force submission of their August 2018 — July 2019 annual report to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence on Tuesday.

ACP Lutunauga mentioned this while responding to

Standing Committee member Selai Adimaitoga’s question regarding the effectiveness of investigations and prosecution made by the Fiji Police Force in reference to annual performance.

“That is detection rate – 69 per cent and the reduction in crime, our key performance indicators, as you can see in the report that we have reduced crime,” he said.

“That is how effective our investigation because of the functions of the units that we have as far as CID is concerned.

“We have all these various units and it is being reflected in our KPI, with only the exception of crime against women which increased by 0.2 per cent.”

ACP Lutunauga said the target was to maintain detection rate at 70 per cent and there were plans in place regarding this.

“That includes capacity building for our CID, training programs, we’ve brought in video recordings, interviews and these are some of the initiatives that will assist us achieve the 70 per cent target.”

He said he was thankful to the Government for providing support as far as forensics was of concern.

“We are currently with New Zealand police in enhancing our K9 capability.

“These are all our capabilities that will assist us in addressing or achieving the target as far as investigation and detection is concerned.”

Committee deputy chairperson Salik Govind then asked why the target was 70 per cent and not 100.

To this, ACP Lutunauga replied, “the KPI was set by Government during work carried out for the People’s Charter”.

“It should be 100 per cent, we will try our best.”
