Institute to celebrate 50th anniversary
THE Fiji Institute of Accountants was established on January 31, 1972 and this year it marks its 50th anniversary.
FIA president Pravinesh Singh said it had also taken a good 50 years to revise the Fiji Institute of Accountants Act, which was passed in early December 2021, adding that the modernized Act opened up new possibilities for FIA accountants.
“The Institute was founded with 123 members of whom 71 were chartered accountants with other professional accountancy bodies, and 52 were licensed accountants.
“Today, the FIA has a membership of 952 members. There are 353 chartered accountants now of which 52 are holding Certificate of Public Practice.”
At a press conference on Thursday at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva, Mr Singh said the FIA’s 50th anniversary celebrations would be held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau on Saturday June 25.
He said the event was timely, with the national budget announcement to take place next month; the institute would hold a preliminary budget discussion during the anniversary event.
“Using our platform for this discussion makes the FIA unique as it can draw on the expertise of its professionals in one sitting.
“We are honoured that the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum will be attending our pre-budget forum as a panel member,” he said.
Meanwhile the other panelists for the session were Reserve Bank of Fiji governor Arif Ali, Fiji Revenue & Customs Service chief executive officer Mark Dixon and Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission CEO Joel Abraham.
