Opposition MPs tour Taiwanese farm
MEMBERS of the Opposition last week toured the Taiwan Technical Mission’s farm in Nacocolevu, Sigatoka to see first-hand the work Taiwan had been doing over the past years. Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka said learning about the work Taiwan did was illuminating.
“We very much appreciate the program laid out by the Taiwanese ambassador and his staff in Fiji,” he said.
“To see firsthand the level of support and development in this country for us most of us are new in Parliament and to learn that they have been here for the past 40 years is quite illuminating.
“They have helped us with sugar, pawpaw and many other crops, not forgetting aquaculture.”
While in Nacocolevu last week, Mr Gavoka said they witnessed the potential for guava for farmers in Fiji.
“If you look back to history, it is through them that pawpaw is what it is today. “In every part of Fiji now you have pawpaw as a major produce being sold locally and overseas and the way things are developing give guava which is a high yield for the farmers can also become the same way that we have seen pawpaw develop.
“The prospects are very exciting and I would just ask the Government to help as much as possible in equipping the farmers to work with Taiwan to grow this particular fruit. “We always knew Taiwan was always there to help us in special areas but today we appreciate the work they have done for us and the potential they have.
“We will as parliamentarians will raise this matter in Parliament to see there is close cooperation in these specific areas where they are helping.”
