Families assisted by water project

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

AFTER many years of experiencing intermittent water supply, 20 families now face no problems of hiring vehicles to search for water.

The families at Coboi Settlement in Bua have counted themselves blessed, describing their past situation as a struggle.

Village elder Jeremai Kalouwaca said women would no longer walk miles to wash clothes in the creek on the mountains and men wouldn’t have to hire vehicles to cart water from neighbours or families’ houses.

“It’s a big relief for us because water is a need and we use it everyday so having this project done in Coboi is a blessing,” he said.

“When this settlement started our elders who have gone before us used water directly from the source which was not clean and safe for drinking.

“Then we had a borehole which only lasted for six years and for more than 10 years we have faced intermittent supply.”

In commissioning the water project, Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate told villagers this was Government’s priority – ensuring that all Fijians had accesses to clean drinking water.

“We only have eight years left to achieve this. By 2030, all Fijians should have access to clean drinking water,” he said.

“This project cost $74,000 and we are glad that villagers also assisted our team from Water Authority of Fiji in installing piping system during the work period.

“This project also includes a 10,000 litres of water tank and I plead with the village water committee to maintain what we’ve started.”
