Walking home

- Joycelyn Karawa at the Thurston Gardens in Suva.

Only us humans

AS we advance into the future, we see developments that change waterways and cause flooding. We cut down forests, dam, rivers and more production of motor vehicles. More vehicles, more pollution.

We make flimsy roads that are riddled with potholes.

We over fish our seas and have to put bans on some types of fish.

We have wireless signals that affect bees.

And just when we thought all was good, Russia invades Ukraine causing price of goods to go up.

Then we have to contend with COVID, many people lost their jobs.

Only us humans will ruin mother Earth.

Not the animals, because they do things naturally.

Unhappiest period of my life

I WAS sharing with a friend this week that for the past two years from 2020 during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic until today 2022, is the unhappiest period of my life. I'm 52 years of age now.

A new government with new ideas and real care attitude towards its citizens will lighten up my day and put smiles again on my face and other Fijians.

I want a leader who can sacrifice himself/herself by forfeiting hefty salaries and travelling allowance every time he/she goes overseas for official duties. If you are that kind of a leader, you have my vote.

A marketing strategy

WAS it really, a marketing strategy, for the Maroons, to lose,

Game 2 of the State of Origin? This was surprisingly, suggested this morning, (29/06) by a radio announcer, perhaps, jokingly?

The Blues and Maroons, have now won one each and to bring the spectators in,

for the decider in Brisbane,

the Maroons need to give away Game 2.

That sounds nonsensical,

non-sportslike and so hypothetical.

But the tickets have apparently sold out,

was it a marketing strategy?

that I very much doubt? EDWARD BLAKELOCK

Bins at Marine Drive

THANK you Nishant Singh for highlighting the eyesore at Marine Drive (FT 29/06/22) in Lautoka and the irresponsible Fijians. May I suggest that the Lautoka City Council install more bins every few metres. Not just at the Marine Drive, but at parks and within the city as well. Another problem I witnessed is the increase in stray dogs and the havoc they cause with rubbish and poop spewed everywhere. Maybe when the new government comes into power, it can set things in order and give back the ratepayers our democratic preference of looking after our city since the administrators are not capable. Bus fare increase

WHILE the majority of bus commuters bemoan the recent bus fare increase, one positive outcome that should be acknowledged is that it’s practically forced commuters, mostly high school students to walk (which is a great way of exercising) from their school bus stop to the next bus fare stage to save themselves a few dollars. What’s worrying though, is what’s saved in bus fares is probably used to buy instant noodles which they snack on while walking. Sadly, that “walk/ exercise” now has hardly any effect with all that instant noodles consumed daily.

THOSE two primary school students who had to walk home after school when they were not allowed in the bus because they did not have enough money is a very sad situation.

The bus driver was just doing his job.

Everybody is bound by certain rules and obligations but nothing should stop them from making a humane call.

It’s not an easy feat to walk that long distance. First let them reach their destination then look into the matter. Parents please also keep a tab of their balance in the card.
