A passion for arts
WHILE urging aspiring artists, Toni Harm Nam, whose story appeared in the People column (FT 01/07), had an important message, “Try to push yourself and be creative in thinking outside the box and also utilise social media and other platforms.
“Just know that everyone’s art is uniquely different and don’t forget to have fun in the process.”
As a young and emerging artist slowly moving up the ladder in the local art industry, Toni has had great experiences capturing photography.
She is keen to represent her root, showcasing her skills as a Chinese girl. She is motivating aspiring talents in the field of photography and I’m adamant she will make an ideal role model.
Wishing Toni all the best in her future endeavours!

Labasa electricity supply
I THANK Energy Fiji Ltd and the Labasa EFL workers for giving us a very stable electricity supply throughout the year.
It is only during the crushing season that we do have a few blackouts. Sometimes during the crushing no engines are running in the EFL power station.
I just request the FCCC CEO to reduce electricity charges for Labasa users during the crushing season. I am sure you can do this very easily.
As for blackouts on Viti Levu, just read the blackout reports properly and rectify the recurring problems.

Let’s hope
THE present system of leadership running the municipal councils cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.
We must seek justice as it is our right as ratepayers to demand the restoration of municipal elections as enshrined in our Constitution.
Obviously one cannot selectively implement the constitutional provisions to suit one’s own agenda.
As a layman, I stand to be corrected. But the scenario created pertaining to the municipal elections looks too fishy. Council election is of least interest to the ruling party as they, I think, know what the result would be.
Suffering are the towns and their financial contributors as a result of no elections. Knowing very well that nothing will change I feel compelled to write this piece nonetheless. Under the circumstances, one does not lose hope as snow will one day be melting. Thank you for reading my letter.

Showing compassion
RATHER than labelling it
“lack of compassion” (FBS
29/06), I believe the Fiji Bus Operators Association general secretary Rohit Latchan would be better off lobbying with LTA.
The other alternative is that he be willing to stand for any fines arising from bus drivers showing compassion. The bus drivers need to buy bread.
Don’t blame the bus driver because it’s easy to. Who gave the cards, who made the rules? Start there. Make that human.
This is not few and far between, there are many unreported cases. Difference is this one has been highlighted by the famous Facebook page. RICK EYRE Labasa
Insomnia issue
INSOMNIA is the inability to sleep, or sleep depravity. Fatigue, depression or anxiety and wrong time eating and drinking. Medical conditions like heart disease and high blood pressure. Substance abuse and stressing, are also to blame.
When resting and scheduling, are not in your game. Consistent sleep schedule and breathing pure fresh air, all help to prevent and cure, the dreaded insomnia.

Governing is like cooking fish
proper
SUVA lawyer Richard Naidu’s opinion piece “Is this really how our democracy should be?: Rules for everything”. (FT 25/6), reminds me of the Chinese saying that the sage-ruler understands that
“Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much handling [too much poking] will spoil it” (Lao Tsu, ancient Chinese philosopher 1.551-479 BCE).
No wonder Richard feels that “the sheer suffocating silliness of all these rules — and the mentality they represent” go against the grain of good democratic governance.
It’s hard to disagree with that.

Farming initiative
THE successful stories of Fijian Youth Farming Entrepreneurships captured by Ministry of Youth FB Page, is encapsulating and motivating to both elderly and young generations.
However, this dream will only be possible if land is made available.
I hope someone out there reading this letter especially Viti Levu landowners will give his/her unused mataqali Land to be utilised which will benefit all Fijians and our ailing economy.
We will pay lease and dues owed to the landlord, but at least the turnaround time of processing documentation should not be time consuming.
Think outside the box
