$70m applications
THE Department of Town and Country Planning has processed more than $70 million worth of major building applications this year.
Speaking at the World Town Planning Day on Tuesday, Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said the department had been actively contributing to Fiji’s economic recovery in the building sector.
The theme for this year is “Think Global Plan Local”.
Mr Ali said there was a lot of work ahead in terms of reforming and strengthening the DTCP with the ultimate aim to facilitate development that aids in the economic recovery.
“At the same time, we will look at strategically planning for the future of our towns, cities and rural growth areas,” he said.
Mr Ali said in partnership with the Singapore Government, the government entered into a long term planning framework which consists of a 50 year Master plan - for major cities and towns in Viti Levu.
He said planning also meant looking within and identifying areas of improvements which also meant modernisation and simplification of systems.
“As part of the reforms, we have launched the trial phase of online application for starting a business.
“And in 2023, starting a business application and approvals will be fullyautomated. As for construction permits, we are currently undertaking requirements gathering.
“Which means reviewing and revising procedures and policies to make processes simple for applicants.”
Mr Ali said Government was also investing in satellite growth centres that included Nabouwalu, Seqaqa, Korovou and Keiyasi.
