President thanks ‘vanua’

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

THE President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere acknowledged the upbringing of his vanua which has contributed to his position in leadership.

In thanking the vanua of Macuata during the one-year anniversary as the President of Fiji.

Ratu Wiliame told villagers that the guidance and teaching of the elders has turned him into a leader, being the President of Fiji.

All the corrections, advice and lectures by the elders has put him in the right track of not only being the President but a person and a traditional leader to lead his people with humility.

He urged the village leaders to continue working with the younger generation to teach their children the lifestyle and culture of Caumatalevu.

With today’s westernisation influence,

Ratu Wiliame reminded his people, especially the younger generation, to hold on to their dialect and their traditions.

This, he said, couldn’t and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Ratu Wiliame also urged the villagers to work together in unity and love, as these were important elements that contributed to successful projects.

He thanked the women of Macuata district for spearheading a project that would benefit not just women, but the villagers as well.

Apart from the celebration, Ratu Wiliame also opened the women’s fundraising drive to raise funds for a new building in Seaqaqa.

The building will be a venue for their meetings, functions and would include spaces for rent.

Women’s group president Tupou Wasailau said the project was a great need as it would empower women to achieve their goals.
