Focus on wellness

- By SAVENACA BARO

IT is often said that an organisation’s most valuable asset is its people or human capital. The Endogenous growth models highlights the importance of human capital on economic growth and development. Health is an important determinant of economic development; a healthy population means higher productivity, thus higher income per head. The importance of human capital to economic growth cannot be over emphasized because it serves as a catalyst to economic development.

Studies have proven that improvements in productivity can be tied directly to faster innovation and more investments in human capital from governments and private sector institutions.

In light of COVID there has been a lot of impacts on the emotional and mental health of people thus there is a need to be more inclined towards managing these issues.

TOPEX 2022 will feature three key speakers who will cover the importance of “Employee Wellness and Corporate Risk”, outlining how health and managing good corporate wellness can contribute to success in organisations.

The Minister for Health, Ifereimi Waqainabete will provide insight in to Fiji’s health statistics and what the common issues that employers and organisations need to be aware of especially with our young population.

It is important as leaders within organisation to understand how to manage and mitigate issues being faced.

Also a key issue for most employers to recognise is the emotional and mental challenges being face and LifeLine Fiji team leader, Jeremaia Mereakula will be sharing on important elements that can help save lives.

We have a population that is predominantly centred around nine to five occupation and it is incumbent for work place leaders to now understand the new dynamics in the world of work.

How to lead and create good corporate workplace culture that influences a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

James Sowane of Tewaka will also be on hand to share experiences especially around managing wellness and corporate risk in one of Fiji’s largest industry,Tourism.

As shared by Bob Nelson “An employee’s motivation is a direct result of the sum of interactions with his or her manager. You get the best effort from others not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within. Take time to appreciate employees and they will reciprocate in a thousand ways.”

Corporate risk now not only revolves around loss of workplace assets such as equipment and funds but also through the culture and well being of resources such as the people that deliver on the organization’s objectives.

Hence it is key to ensure that employee wellness is a key factor to consider to ensure success and minimise risk.
