‘Right to hold strikes, will be respected’

THE right to hold strikes and peaceful marches by members of trade unions will be respected by a The People’s Alliancele­d government.

Deputy party leader Manoa Kamikamica said this while speaking at a rally with aviation industry workers in Nadi this week.

“The People’s Alliance recognises that strikes continue to be an essential ultimate tool for workers to improve their working conditions,” he said.

“We will promote the freedom of people to freely assemble and respect their right for industrial action.”

He said trade unions would be an essential contributo­r to workers and employer-related discussion­s with their government.

“The People’s Alliance believes in the value of true democracy, healthy debates for the achievemen­t for comprehens­ive sound policies that result from engaging in consultati­on.

“The national tripartite forums and the national economic summits will be introduced immediatel­y.

“The People’s Alliance recognises the right of workers to establish and join organisati­ons and all unions of their own choosing in full freedom and such freedom must be respected in law.

reduce wage inequality because of strong unions setting pay standards even for non-union employees to follow.”

He added union cooperatio­n in national discussion­s must embody the spirit of partnershi­ps that were at the core of the 2030 Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Goals agenda.

“No other time in history that this has been more crucial.

“The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic urges us all to work together and accelerate at the national level consultati­ons and active participat­ion with workers organisati­ons.

“We need union organisati­on in addressing the challenges that we face at the national, regional and global level.”
