Show lives up to its name

THE Suva Soul Revival certainly lived up to its name.

It took the sold-out crowd on a musical journey down memory lane with “old school” tunes and brought them to their feet as they danced into the night last Friday at Kanalevu Kitchen, Laucala Bay Rd.

The Gang’s vocalists Saki Kaloumaira and Ilisoni Lesu Uluitoga backed up by Henry Steele, Rosie Sagaitu and Adi Vasiti Nakautoga were nothing short of amazing in the UpBeats Events, Kanalevu Kitchen and Party and Events Fiji show.

The band that provided the grooves featured some of the country’s finest with Sam Mawi (keys), Saula Radrodro (auxiliary keys), Conrad Kwan (lead guitarist), One2Eight bassist Ratu Joe Tabakaucoro, Isireli Vulaca (drums) and jazz legend Tom Mawi.

Lead singer Saki Kaloumaira said the night was about bringing back soul and old school music.

“It’s a night of showcasing music which people would listen to in the ’90s and music our parents grew up with,” he said.

“So we were trying to revive that in a place here like Fiji where I think there is not a lot of appreciation of this type of music.

“I’m blessed to be a part of it again this year and I’m also a big fan of soul music and old school music.

“We have been having these shows for the past two to three years and we hope to achieve more awareness of this type of music in Fiji and more appreciation for it.”

Kaloumaira said The Gang were working on releasing a few singles in the upcoming months.

“We are working on an album with renowned local producer Phil Dakei of Makare and will be releasing our debut album next year.”
