Mailman asks for increase

- By ANISH CHAND

THE Post Fiji Back to School campaign was launched this week to help parents and guardians get better deals as they prepare for the 2023 academic year that begins on January 30.

Speaking at the launch, permanent secretary for Education Anjeela Jokhan said Post Fiji had been running the program since 1998.

She said such programs would open up avenues for parents to prepare their children well and not be pressured at the last minute.

“The fact we have decided to open schools at the end of January means that after the festive season, parents will have some time before getting into back to school shopping,” Ms Jokhan said.

“The coupons, which have been distributed to schools, once stamped by the school, will allow the students to get a discount of 5 per cent on their total stationery purchase at any Post Fiji outlet.

“There will also be a lucky draw for each of the four divisions allowing schools to win monetary prizes starting from $200 once the coupons with school stamps go into the draw together with shopping vouchers for individual winners.”

She also reminded parents and guardians to closely monitor their children during this cyclone season as we have already begun to experience heavy rainfalls and flooding in certain parts of Fiji.

POST Fiji Ltd has made an application to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) proposing an increase in postal rates for domestic parcel post and letter-mail items.

Post Fiji is proposing that the “first 30g fraction thereof surface mail or air mail” that currently costs 42 cents be changed to “first 100g fraction thereof surface mail or air mail”, with a new price of $2.

The company wants surface mail price, which is now 5 cents, to increase by 1 cent.

Post Fiji wants an increase in air parcel mail between Suva, Savusavu, Labasa and Waiyevo that is between 2-2.5 kilogram to cost $8.34.

The company proposes that all air mail between Suva, Moala, Cicia, Gau, Koro, Vanuabalavu, Kadavu, Levuka, Lakeba and Ono-i-Lau weighting between 2 and 2.5 kilograms to cost $9.09.

$19.95 is being proposed as new price for air mail weighing between 2 and 2.5 kilograms to Rotuma.

Post Fiji is proposing increases in sea and surface parcels within each district in Fiji.

“Considering the proposal made by Post Fiji, FCCC will now undertake a comprehensive review of the domestic postal rates in Fiji and invites members of the public to actively participate in this review by providing their views, comments, and suggestions on whether there is a need to increase domestic postal rate in Fiji,” stated FCCC.

Those wishing to make a submission can send an email to submissions@fccc.gov.fj by December 23.
