Brothers meet after thirty years

- By ANISH CHAND

TWO brothers met for the first time yesterday after 30 years to celebrate Christmas and strengthen their blood ties.

36-year-old Sakiusa Rakoso thanked God for bringing his elder brother, Suliasi Sauqaleka into his life.

The two have lived separately, Mr Rakoso on Vanua Levu and Mr Sauqaleka on Viti Levu, not knowing they had the same father.

“For most of my life I didn’t know my father. All I knew was that he was from Gau and that his name was Akariva. He also lived in Viti Levu. I didn’t know where he worked or where he lived in Viti Levu, but I always wondered and asked my mother where my father was,” said Mr Rakoso.

In 1998 Mr Rakoso came to Viti Levu and started living in Davuilevu and started class 8 education.

“After a few years, I came to Suva then moved to Lautoka where I met my wife who hails from Bukama in Yasawa.

“We’ve been here for a few years finding work and moving around Lautoka until we came to Kermode Rd two months ago.”

“While here, I met some boys who while talking to them I found out that they were also from Gau. They invited me to drink grog and from our conversations I realised that they also had a father named Akariva.”

“When I asked which village he was from, they said they were from Nacavanadi Village, the same village where my father was from.

“I started to see the resemblance we had and I knew instantly that they were my brothers.”

Mr Rakoso found out recently that his father passed on a few years ago.

“Today (yesterday) they invited me to come and spend Christmas with them and I feel very blessed that I could spend this day with them.

“I thank God for giving us this time and I am very grateful that He was able to bring me here today.”
