Happy Boxing Day
NOW that we have a new Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, interest will slowly shift to the make-up of our new parliament. With the elections, and drama at the Social Democratic Liberal Party finally over, we now focus on what our Government has to offer.
There are obviously critical issues facing the nation that need attention.
While the Government knows it will have to accept scrutiny and criticism, it was encouraging to note the acknowledgement given to the outgoing government for all it had done.
There was a sense of humility evident that was different!
What we have right now are leaders who are prepared to play their part and live up to the expectations of the voters.
The challenge for them now is to chart paths that will positively move us forward as a nation.
In saying that, we accept that there will be challenges given the intricacies surrounding coalition partners. However, the first signs are there that there is a willingness to make this happen for the greater good of the nation.
That is refreshing.
It now falls back on members of the new government to stand by their commitment to the nation, for every Fijian irrespective of who they voted for at the elections, and their political leaning.
Fijians spoke at the polls. A large percentage wanted change.
It goes without saying that the Government will need the support of the masses. It will need to communicate and listen to them. Feedback will empower them to lead us confidently moving forward.
It’s Boxing Day today, and while some people will be feeling the after-effects of the festivities yesterday, there are many who will be pondering on their next course of action.
As we enjoy the Christmas break, we should remind ourselves that there are many Fijians who are struggling to make ends meet. Some did not have enough to eat and some had no roof they could call their own over their heads.
To members of the security forces on duty, security guards, corrections service, journalists, hotel staff, all those who work in our hospitals and health centres around the country, LTA staff, supermarket cashiers and staff, public service vehicle drivers, and everyone else who could not take a day off over the Christmas break, we say thank you for your service and commitment.
Let’s make this period a source of national unity. Let us spare a thought for the less fortunate.
The spirit of Christmas is about giving.
As we go about our plans today, let’s remember that accidents happen. They happen because we allow them to.
If you are on the road today, please stick to our road rules.
For all those who will be converging on our many beaches and waterways, let us be vigilant.
We are just days away from the end of the year. Let us work together to end 2022 on a good note.
We hope you have a happy Boxing Day!
