Police book 111

- By PEKAI KOTOISUVA

A HUNDRED and eleven drivers were booked for speeding and four for drink driving from 6am on Monday morning to yesterday.

In a statement, chief operations officer and Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu said the Western Division recorded the highest number of bookings for speeding and drink driving.

“Of the 111 bookings for speeding, 54 were recorded in the West, 33 in the South and 24 in the Eastern Division,” said Acting ACP Driu.

“Three of the four drink drive arrests were made in the Western Division.

“A 47-year-old technician, 30-year-old taxidriver and a 33-year-old PSV driver were arrested in Lautoka for driving under the influence of alcohol. The fourth arrest was made in the Southern Division along Matanikorovatu Rd in Nasinu where a 26-year-old man residing in Narere was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Acting ACP Driu is calling on drivers to recognise the threat of driver fatigue.

“On Monday, three children and a 28-year-old man were rushed to the Navua Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and landed in a drain.

“The driver of the vehicle said he fell asleep, resulting in the accident which occurred before 9am near Korovisilou.

“The passengers were treated and sent home. The driver will be questioned as investigations continue.”

Acting ACP Driu said while traffic operations were focused along main highways and known black spot areas, snap checkpoints would be set up throughout the country as a proactive measure for drivers to be aware of issues of concern regarding road safety.

He said police would continue to issue the advisories and the onus was on drivers to take heed for their own safety and the safety of other road users.
