PEOPLE on Vanua Levu are no different from others in other parts of the country when it comes to celebrations.

When the coalition between the Peoples Alliance part, National Federation Party, and Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) was announced last week, there were scenes of wild celebrations in parts of Vanua Levu.

The explosion of fireworks, beating of drums and tooting of car horns in residential and town areas.

Villagers on Yacata Island in Cakaudrove took time out to beat drums while some danced to songs. On Taveuni, the announcement was celebrated with yaqona sessions. The Savusavu and Labasa areas were enveloped with noise and the colour of fireworks.

In Buca Bay area, where former SODELPA

parliamentarian Niko Nawaikula hails from, villagers rolled a big drum onto the gravel road while beating it to the tune of their cheers and songs.

Bulileka villagers (Labasa) and cane farmers used a cane truck and drove around the area singing songs and cheered for the coalition parties. This happened after the group turned the village main road into a dance floor.

The same celebration was held in villages of Bua with a bigger being planned.

Bua villager and traditional leader in the district of Lekutu, Tevita Raiova, said it was time to celebrate a change that many people longed for.

“We are planning a bigger celebration in the village and we are positive of a good turnout.”

Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho has urged people to be always responsible during their celebrations.
