FRU BOSS ON ACHIEVEMENTS MADE THIS YEAR:

- By ROHIT DEO

“It has been a great year.”

Those were the sentiments of Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor reminiscing on the achievement of the union in 2022.

“It was a year that when we look back on, there were so many achievements and so many firsts for our teams,” O’Connor said.

“The men’s 7s side winning the World Cup and putting us back on top of the world was one of the best this year.

“Our women’s side finished with silver at the Commonwealth Games and second-place finishes at the World Sevens Series tournaments was also an achievement.”

O’Connor added the achievements of the Drua teams will not be forgotten easily as well.

“Both our Drua teams (Fijian and Fijiana) took part in their first ever Super Rugby competitions. The women made history winning the Super Rugby W title in their inaugural tournament and that is something we will cherish forever.

“Also, the Fijiana 15s side took part in their first ever Rugby World Cup and recorded a win against South Africa. All in all, 2022 was a great year for FRU.”

O’Connor thanked the support from fans and sponsors this season.

“A huge thank you to everyone who backed our teams this year. Thank you for the prayers, the cheers and for always being behind your teams.

“We appreciate your support and hope for the same next year.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji 7s team to the Hamilton 7s in January will be named after the Coral Coast 7s tournament.

O’Connor confirmed that double Olympic gold medallist Jerry Tuwai is training with the team and is expected to make a comeback at the Hamilton 7s event after missing out on the past two tournaments.

The 2023 Hamilton 7s will be played on January 21-22.
