Pele’s contribution to football

-

BEFORE Pele made his debut for Brazil, the South American nation had never won the World Cup. Arguably Pele’s greatest contribution to football and Brazil was to transform his underachieving nation into a footballing superpower.

Pele remains the only player to have played for three World Cup winning teams. He burst on to the scene at the age of 17 in 1958, scoring six goals in the knock-out stages, including two in the final against Sweden, as Brazil recorded its first triumph.

He won back-to-back World Cups for Brazil. After retiring from international football for two years he returned in time for Mexico 1970, determined to win the Jules Rimet trophy.

His performances in what is often called the greatest team of all time capped his international career. After winning the World Cup in 1970, Pele, who was dubbed the greatest player of all time, truly captured the imagination of football fans. He was born with the ball at his feet.

Every movement, every pass, every goal was special.

He impressed fans with his agility, technique and love for the game. Pele was hailed as the person who made football an art form. The world will always remember Pele as the king of football and the legend of the beautiful game!
