- By PEKAI KOTOISUVA

RUTHIE Konusi who hails from the beautiful island of Rotuma says she cannot wait to step foot on Japan.

The 20-year-old who is a second-year Bachelor of Science student majoring in biology and chemistry is among 110 students who were selected under the University of the South Pacific’s JENESYS Program.

Speaking to this newspaper, Ms Konusi said as a Pacific Island student sharing her culture and traditions during the youth exchange program was first on her list.

“Apart from sharing my culture and traditions I am also looking forward to sharing things we do as science students and the way we do things differently, as we know we don’t have a lot of resources so it would be nice to share with the Japanese on how we actually work with what we have,” she said.

“I hope to gain a lot of insight on Japan because I think my knowledge of Japan is quite narrow compared with other people, so I hope to just see things in person, learn about it and also share it back here in Fiji.”

She said she was more excited about learning and experiencing homestay.

“How they live their daily life and also what they do in general that might be different to the way I do things here.

“I’d also love to visit the Tokyo Museum and the airport because I’ve heard a lot about it through my brother who lived in Japan, I am also in the Okinawa group for marine resources, so I’d love to see the old US military base that they have there.”

The 20-year-old said she attended St Joseph’s Secondary School before attending St Andrew’s College in New Zealand on a three-year netball scholarship.
