Couple believed to be latest drowning victims

- By SITERI SAUVAKACOLO

THE generosity rendered by the elderly couple Hari Charan and his wife Asha Wati to Sairusi Kina and his family is something they will miss forever.

Mr Charan, 69, and his wife are believed to be the country’s latest drowning victims after strong currents allegedly swept them away when they were trying to cross a flooded Irish Crossing at Maururu, Ba on Friday.

Mr Kina was on his way to pick up his mother-in-law at around 4pm when he noticed a body lying face down in the nearby flooded creek.

“I was scared when I saw the body, so I went to the man living nearby to tell him of the discovery,” Mr Kina said.

“We found out it was a woman and her head was injured and we called the police straight away.

“We were still at the scene with the police when their son arrived and identified his mom.”

Early yesterday morning, Mr Kina set out again to look for Mr Charan as per request by police and he discovered his neighbour’s body a few metres away from where his wife’s body was found.

Mr Kina said the elderly couple had been their lifesaver ever since they moved to Maurara a month ago.

He said they would miss their caring personalities and their caring hearts.

“Their home was our home, we would charge our mobile phones there and they would give us water and whatever we ask for.

“This is such an unfortunate incident and we will miss them.”

In another incident, an eightyear-old boy is believed to have drowned after being swept away by strong currents in Tacirua. Investigations are ongoing. Authorities have advised members of the public to practice caution in this time of extreme weather.
