Minister commends football body
MINISTER for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended Fiji Football Association for hosting the Oceania Football Confederation Under-17 tournament.
Saukuru says this tournament is important and he is confident the Digicel Fiji Baby Bula Boys can qualify for the U17 World Cup to be held in Peru on November 10.
“Sports generally plays an important role in our society today and our past has proven over and over again that sports can unify us as a nation,” he said.
“Our intentions have been made very clear; we want to set a benchmark in all sporting events.
“We want Fiji to be as competitive as other counterparts in individual or team sports.
“Sports has been regarded as an agent for social change.
“It has multiple effects on any nation or society.
“We are not just looking at propelling sports in Fiji but more so delivering a holistic program that is inclusive of all despite gender physical or racial background.
“Tournaments such as this helps generate economic activity just by hosting the games and importantly it enables our people to enjoy international competitions right here at home.”
He said Government recognised the abundance of natural talent in the country and the importance of supporting sporting activities.
“We have the makings of world class football players here in our midst but we have to provide the necessary environment to harness their development and expose their maximum abilities.
“With the pathways created by Fiji Football Association for our talented local players to go abroad and join professional clubs, many of our players here today will be able to secure overseas contact in the future.”
