1978 January 22, 1978 Boy dies
A picnic trip for a youth group turned sour when a nine-year-old boy died while crossing the Pacific Harbour Road on Saturday. According to a police spokesman, it is believed that the child was crossing the road to get to the shop to buy something. The victim was a student of Veiuto Primary School and was travelling with friends in a hired bus. Just as he was crossing the road, a rental car travelling from Suva towards Sigatoka hit him. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
1989 January 22, 1989 Blood drive campaign
A blood drive in Suva this week, aimed at collecting enough to keep the supply steady. The Lions Club of Suva initiated the drive which began early this week. The immediate past president of the club, Vijay Lakshmi Dutt, said this was the club’s annual blood drive. She said the need for an updated supply was especially necessary at this time of the year when the chances of accidents and other higher.
1980 January 22, 1980 Attract more tourists
South Pacific nations must embrace new methods and techniques in their efforts to attract more tourists, Tourism Minister Harold Powell said in Nadi, yesterday. Addressing the fourth regional Ministers of Tourism meeting, Powell said we must be adaptable to the changing nature of the tourism industry. “We must move together in the future. And we must embrace new methods and new techniques, so as to be at the forefront of new ideas,” he said. 1980
1981 January 22, 1981 Ratepayers protest
Namaka and Martintar Ratepayers Association have protested about a Nadi Town Council proposal to spend $65,000 on upgrading part of the town’s drainage system. The secretary of the association Parasram,said in a letter to the Minister for Housing,Social Welfare and Urban Deveropment, Mohammed Ramzan, that the proposal would be a waste of ratepayers money.
