AN exhibition to promote sports in Fiji was organised by the French Embassy last week.

The exhibition, “Champions”, showcased sports’ diversity and inclusivity.

The embassy’s deputy head of mission, Laurence Brattin-Nerriere, said more than 100 French embassies and permanent representations on five continents had already chosen to join the “Terre de Jeux (Land of the Games) 2024” program and the embassy in Fiji had benefited from this label since its launch.

“In Fiji, the French Embassy together with ONOC and FASANOC organised a run-a-thon to mark International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6, 2022 and on the November 10 in partnership with Tower Insurance,

FASANOC and Vodafone Fiji,” she said.

“We officially named a school football ground at Nakasi High School in honour of Fiji’s first female Olympian, Mrs Miriama Tuisorisori Chambault.”

She said apart from the operations carried out within the framework of the Terre de Jeux label, inclusivity was always the main highlight of each program.

“We were part of the International

Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrations organised on December 19 and 20, 2022 in Suva by Sport Matters.

“We collaborated with this NGO and provided 2000 Euro ($F4596) in sponsorship to help them conduct an inclusive sports forum at the Suva Bowling Club and a Sports fun day held in Nausori. This last event was designed to include people with lower limb amputations and their families from Tailevu,

Rewa, Naitasiri and Nausori.

“Local Diabetes Hub was also on site to conduct free health testing for the participants.

“This sports fun day aimed to deliver a fun, safe and inclusive introduction for sports and participants had an opportunity to try athletics, archery, modified boccia, badminton, table tennis, volleyball and yoga.”

Pacific Energy was the main sponsor for the event.
