Hard work pays off for single mum

BEING a market vendor is not an easy fete.

To sell produce, one must have patience, marketing talents, confidence and customer service skills.

Mohini Lata has managed to do that effortlessly – thanks to her 30 years of experience as a market seller.

She started her long career as a vendor at the old Nausori market and moved to its new location after the new Nausori market was opened. She has not looked back ever since.

With the money she earned over the years, the 51-year-old has built her family a home. She also financially supported her three sons through their academic journey.

Her husband passed away 20 years ago. Since then she has been the sole provider for her family and she has managed well.

“I have been managing alone for a long time now. I look after my stall here, manage my household and look after my children,” Ms Lata said.

“It can be challenging but I have learnt a lot. I have also become a stronger person.”

The solo mum said her two sons are now employed and assist her in managing the household.

“One of my sons is a banker, the other is a joiner and my youngest will be going to university this year.”

As a market vendor at one of the country’s most popular markets she said there was stiff competition among vendors but she understood that it was the way business worked.

She mentioned that the prices of vegetables from suppliers had been an issue for her as they often fluctuate.

“Prices always go up and down but I don’t want to increase my price because I’d lose customers so I just manage somehow.”

The Nausori resident said envy from other vendors was another challenge she faced but she overcame this by being “kind to others”.

Ms Lata said there could never be success without struggle. Therefore she urged all Fijians to have patience and commitment during challenging times.

“You might have to struggle in order to have success. Sometimes you need to learn how to work very hard. Complaining every time will never help.

“I have grown from my struggles and I live a comfortable life so if I can do it then anyone can.”
