THE Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Development team is targeting a top finish at the 36th Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s tournament at Prince Charles Park in Nadi today.

The side with players such as former national reps Terio Tamani and Paula Nayacakalou recorded a no sweat default victory against DSM Clermont Stallion in round one of the competition.

Fiji 7s assistant coach Viliame Satala said they were trying to test the players who were not part of the national team for Hamilton 7s and Sydney 7s recently.

Satala said the selectors would also be looking at talented players in the other teams to be part of the wider national training squad.

“There are a couple of players in this development squad who have already represented Fiji while the others are fighting their way up through the ranks,” he said.

“These boys have been training with their respective clubs for the past couple of weeks. This week they just met up to iron a few things out.”

The national squad will resume camp next Tuesday in preparation for the next leg of the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series which is in the United States of America and Canada.

Meanwhile a few upsets were recorded in the opening round of the Nawaka 7s.

Defending champions Warden Gold was held to a 21-all draw by Duiba while Police White went down 5-10 to Druhacake Investment and Fiji Bitter Nawaka Black lost to Navala 0-12. Day Two of the tournament will kick off at 9am today with the spoon eliminations. The main cup final is scheduled to be held at 5.20pm. The winner will receive $10,000.
