RKS remembers former coach Vu

RATU Kadavulevu School students took time out from their athletics inter-house competition to remember their fallen athletics coach Moave Vu who was laid to rest yesterday.

Vu, who has been a backbone of the school’s athletics achievements, was buried at the Naikaciwa Cemetery in Nasinu.

RKS assistant principal Masi Saqanivere said when Vu took over the athletics team, he brought back the competitive competition within the athletics arena.

“He always believed in breeding our own,” Saqanivere said. “When he joined in the first year we came in third, during his second term with us we came first and defended the title from 2018, 2019 until COVID-19 hit in 2020 and 2021.

“We will continue his legacy and together with the teachers and parents, we will work on developing and breeding our own athletes.”

Saqanivere said their first aim was to take as many participants to the zone and the Coca-Cola Games.

The first gold medal of the day was won by Jale Samuwai of Cakau House in the sub-junior boys 1500 meters.

Ma’afu House won the blue ribbon event which went to Jonetani Gonewai who ran a time of 11.25 seconds. His house mates Ilisoni Matairakula (11.63s) and Vilimoni Koroi (11.72s) finished second and third.

Ma’afu House leads the medal tally after day with 10 gold, 14 silver and five bronze. Sukuna House is second with eight gold, seven silver and six bronze. Cakau is in third place with five gold medals, one silver and six bronze followed by Degei with eight gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.
