Students urged to put on best performance
THE Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League Association (FSSRLA) is encouraging players to give their best during matches because performances are monitored every week during the Vodafone Cup competition.
FSSRLA marketing and media officer Laisiasa Corerega said a handful of local high school ruggers had been offered scholarships and contracts to play overseas over the past few months.
He said the association was working closely with the Fiji National Rugby League high performance unit in monitoring players.
“The parent body FNRL PTE Ltd’s HighPerformance Unit continues to monitor and list down students’ names in the past two rounds,” Corerega said.
“They are present on the grounds every Saturday. This process makes it easy for the scouts to identify and get more information about the players.”
With two weeks of competition completed, Corerega said he had been impressed with performances from schools in the Western Division.
“We have teams like Natabua High School and Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute who have been some of the underdogs in previous years.
“Unfortunately, because of adverse weather in the Western Division, schools were unable to carry out round two of the FSSRL Vodafone Cup competition.
“And since school has been closed today (yesterday), all matches will be postponed until further notice.”
Corerega said it was pleasing to see fans and supporters turn up in numbers to support their schools.
“I’d like to thank fans, supporters, parents, and students for turning up at games over the past weeks.”
Corerega thanked Vodafone Fiji for continuing to support grassroots rugby league in Fiji.
