Award for farmers

THE efforts of copra farmers was recognised through the Presidents Awards held at Savusavu on Monday.

In thanking all copra farmers, the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, said such awards were designed to be a motivator and enabled people to have competitiv­e production.

“The purpose of the awards is to raise awareness of coconut products and encourage farmers to invest time in the coconut industry,” he said.

“The essence of such awards is to also boost participan­ts to work towards a certain benchmark and supersede the pace you have achieved.

“I commend Coconut Millers of Fiji in contributi­ng towards the nation. They are truly an inspiratio­n to both new and existing farmers.”

Ratu Wiliame said the company had also introduced various copra products, provided free seedlings and machines for the mill.

“Awards such as this boost the company’s reputation and celebrates hard work of farmers, that they’re appreciate­d,” he said.

“I understand this journey has not been easy as challenges from environmen­t global issues and other effects have hindered our commitment.

“Equally important is the inclusion of various award categories for farmers especially for the women and young farmers.”

Farmers who received awards:

Best Island Farmer — Petero Turaganibe­ci from Cicia Island in the Lau group;

Best Farmer of the Year — Ravin Prasad;

Highest Copra Supplier — Timoci Tawake;

Young Farmer of the Year — Nemani Buliraurau;

Best Farmer for Highest Dry Copra Supply — Michael Evans;

Highest Raw Copra Supply — David Simpson;

Highest Coconut Supplier — Graham Haynes.
