FIJI'S tourism industry has been a significant contributor to the country's economy, and it's no secret that women have played a pivotal role in its success. Women make up around 60 per cent of tourism's workforce directly, so it is reasonable to state that they have been the backbone of this industry; making it the flourishing industry that it is today.

On this International Women's Day, we take a moment to celebrate the women who have made significant strides in the tourism industry and those who have contributed to Fiji's economy in many other often not recognised ways.

We say to you all – we see you and celebrate your strength and unwavering determination in the face of challenges, especially if you have emerged as leaders in your fields.

However, despite the incremental progress that has been made, we must acknowledge that gender equality is still a pressing issue in Fiji.

This day reminds us that there is still much work to be done to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and ensure that women have the same opportunities as men in every aspect of life.

Far more must be done than just talking about commitments to gender equality and inclusivity. It is very concerning that only 34 per cent of the total paid workforce are women despite a higher percentage of women graduating annually.

This is a clear indication that our systems have failed to create enabling structures where women are given a chance in workplaces and invited further to join senior management teams and boards. Policy makers must make or demand changes in public sector decision-making structures that walk that talk on inclusivity. This is how we create a future where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential and make a positive impact on society.

To all women, not just those in the tourism industry, we thank you for your hard work, dedication, and contributions to our society. Your voices, your talents, and your leadership are essential to building a better future for us all. Happy International Women's Day!
