Ratu Epenisa reflects on challenges

- By ARIETA VAKASUKAWAQA

TURAGA Bale na Vunivalu na Tui Kaba Ratu Epenisa Seru Cakobau says his chiefly status has been associated with many challenges, among them was when he had to spend a night in a police cell.

He said this after addressing the hundreds of people who came to witness him being installed into the traditional role after receiving confirmation from the Native Land Commission (NLC).

Acting NLC head Apimeleki Loki informed Ratu Epenisa that he was recognised as Na Turaga Vunivalu na Tui Kaba the head of the Kubuna Confederacy.

Ratu Epenisa said they never imagined that one day the chiefly role would be filled after it had remained vacant for quite a long time.

“I want to thank my family.

We have been through difficult times. My wife and children suffered, but I thank them for staying the cause. They are true people of Bau,” the newly installed Vunivalu said.

He thanked the chief herald (matanivanua), Ratu Aisea Jack Komaitai for standing by him through some of their most difficult times.

“At one time we were both arrested and slept in the cell for one night, but today (yesterday) we have seen a totally different picture.

“Let us celebrate this day because this is the day we have all been waiting for.

“I will ask God to give me wisdom so that I make sound decisions as I take up this very significant role.”

He said when his late father Ratu Sir George Kadavulevu Cakobau died in 1989, he made the decision to return to the island of Bau to look after his people.

Ratu Epenisa said he remained on the island even though he faced a lot of challenges, was criticised and on the verge of getting thrown off the island.

“My family knows me well, that my doors are always open. Come home if you are faced with issues. Let’s sit down and discuss it.”

He urged the people to work together for the betterment of the country.
