Serve with passion, civil servants told

- By PAULIASI MATEBOTO

HAVE passion for the work you do.

This was the message by the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Jovesa Vocea when he met civil servants on the island of Lakeba.

The Assistant Minister was in Lakeba for the closing of the Lau Seascape 30x30 Marine Protected Areas awareness and consultation.

He urged the island-based officers not to mind the position they are in but to show interest in their line of work.

“Explore other areas in your work environment and if they interest you, increase your knowledge and pursue it with zeal,” Mr Vocea said.

“Don’t look down upon yourself and think that being on the island renders you out of mind with your management back on the mainland. Rather, continue to strive and pursue further studies.

“I started very young in the civil service after finishing high school and worked my way from being a clerk at the then PWD to being Commissioner Northern and Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan and each and every one of you here can do the same and achieve greater things not only for the country but for you individually and your families.”

He assured the civil servants that the Coalition Government will listen to them, and look forward to the continued collaboration.

“I take this time to acknowledge the good work you have been doing over the years and assure you that the Coalition Government will listen, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.

“On that note, I also recognise the work done by the team from Viti Levu who have been around Lau for the past two weeks for the ‘Bose ni Tikina’ and the consultation for the Lau Seascape 30x30 Marine Protected Areas.

“You have done well, and I commend that partnership of the two non-government organisations, Conservation International Fiji and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN Oceania) in working with Government to achieve the national target.”

During his stay on the island, Mr Vocea also visited the newly constructed Tubou market, and various agriculture and women’s projects around the island and took time to visit the officers from the Mineral Resources Department engaged in the Waitabu water project.
