Hundreds turn up for wellness walk

- By PAULIASI MATEBOTO

THE early morning drizzle over the Capital City failed to dampen the spirits of over a hundred people from all walks of life to take part in the Westpac International Women’s Day walk.

The five-kilometre walk saw people walk around the Suva central business district to commemorate the contributions of women in Fiji and also promote healthy living.

Westpac Fiji chief executive officer Shane Smith said the walk was an opportunity for the Westpac family to mingle with the local community.

“I would like to thank all of you for turning up this morning and bring your families and children,” he said.

“We thought that today’s walk would be a way for the Westpac family to come together for a wellness walk and invite the local community.”

Guest speaker for the event, Assistant Minister for Housing and Local Government and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua said while the event was an opportunity to celebrate the immense contribution of women in our society, it was pivotal to look out for each other.

“I would like to thank the Suva marathon club for putting up this walk and making us think about international women’s day,” she said.

“And how important it is to ask the question “are you OK?”, when you ask the question stick around for the answer.

“In Fiji we tend to say ‘all set’ but you got the burden of the world on you.”

Ms Qereqeretabua urged those present to ask their friends and family if they are OK and to stick around for the answer.

Similar walks were held in Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Labasa, Savusavu and Levuka town.
