‘Use technology as a means of economic empowerment’
WOMEN have been urged to use technology as a means of economic empowerment.
Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran told participants at a digital workshop organised by the Ministry of Women that technology provided many opportunities for learning new things.
An example she gave was the social media platform of YouTube which many women have used to learn how to bake, sew and cook, turning these opportunities into small businesses.
“Market are not easy for you but through technology, you can market your products,” she said.
“So this digital training is aimed at equipping women with the knowledge and skills to market their products and also learn new things on various websites.
“Many women make beautiful handicraft items but it’s difficult for you to get to the markets and accessing transport from rural areas can also be difficult.”
Through technology, Ms Kiran said women would be provided an easier means to market their products not only locally but internationally as well through their friends on social media.
“When things are difficult, especially for our rural women, there is much more of a struggle to access information and that is why we have organised this workshop,” she said.
“In marketing our products, we also need to ensure that our quality is good because clients will then continue to order from you and may include hotels.
“Through these social media platforms, you will also be able to access information posted on the ministry’s website and social media pages and it’s important to have access to information.”
