‘Be yourself, help others’

- By ANA MADIGIBULI

BE yourself and always help those around you. These were the words of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School head boy, Abinash Rout to prefects of the school.

Rout who was born in India, is a pure science student who held the school’s assistant and deputy head boy positions in the past two years.

It is an honour to be the head boy of such a big school” Rout said.

“I didn’t expect it because there is a lot of competition for the leadership role so there was some nervousness, especially with the selection criteria.

“I was the assistant head boy and the deputy head boy in the last two years but that of course didn’t guarantee that I would become head boy.”

Rout who was supported by both his parents during the induction day said he was happy with being selected as school head boy.

“It’s great making your parents proud and that is what every child wants so it’s a happy moment for me,” he said.

Head girl of the school, Ulita Raluve Koro who hails from Cevai Village in Tavuki, Kadavu with maternal links to Lomati Village in Cicia, Lau said she was filled with emotion when being badged.

The 18-year-old said she missed her greatest supporter and encourager during the induction –her grandmother who recently passed away.

“I was filled with emotions when I was informed because my grandmother couldn’t be here to witness this. She was my major supporter,” Koro said.

“I’m happy to see my family and friends here supporting me though.”

She said she was able to be elected as the head girl because of God.

“It is through our Father Almighty’s provisions that I was able to achieve this.

“It is an immense pleasure to be leading this institution this year, an institute that is good academically and now coming up in sports too.”

She thanked her father who was there to witness her being badged as the school’s head girl.

“I’m thankful that my dad is here. He was in Kadavu but since last year he has been supporting us in Suva,” she said.

“My maternal grandparents, especially my grandfather have always encouraged us to strive for the best and to always work hard.”

She hopes that students will maintain self-discipline this year.

“I should respect my peers in order to gain their respect too and I will be fair and firm with them as well.” she said.

Over 100 prefects were inducted to lead the school this year at Kshatriya Hall in Suva this month.
