Saunaka upsets Tabadamu

- By TALEI MATAIRAKULA

McDONALD’S Saunaka was one of the surprises on day one of the McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast 7s tournament.

The Nadi-based side stunned Tabadamu 14-0 in their opening match at Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park ground two.

Captain and prop Lasaro Bogisa acknowledged that they have been drawn into a tough pool, having to face tough teams such as Tabadamu, Fiji Babaas, and SRS Tubarua Highlanders.

However, it has also served as a motivation for the players, keeping in mind that the chances of making the national squad are high.

“We came in with a positive mindset, trusting in each other and our capabilities on the field. We want to do wonders during this three-day tournament and if there is something that one of these boys takes back home that would be a place in the national extended squad.

“The match against Tabadamu was as expected, physical and tough but we trusted in our game plan, letting each player play their rightful role and avoiding any fancy play.

“We talked about taking each game as it comes, treating each game as a final, making sure that we end the tournament in a good place,” Bogisa shared.

The win is a solid start to their campaign, injecting confidence into the squad.

“We are in a tough pool but we are taking things as it is and remaining positive about the challenges ahead. We’ll face the Fiji Babaas in our last pool game but we are grounded in our aim of getting our youngsters into the Fiji 7s squad.”

Saunaka battles Fiji Babaas today at 2.45pm.

Former Fiji 7s player Vatemo Ravouvou is part of the Saunaka team.
