Lami paddlers fly out
Hockey teams $40k short
THE Lami Paddling Club has embarked on an incredible journey to Brisbane, Australia, and for the 15 young kids from settlements in Lami, it is a dream come true.
This opportunity will allow them to enhance their knowledge and skills in paddling, as well as explore a new country and culture.
Club president Talei Wilson shared the challenges they have faced in terms of finances. Like many sports, paddling requires financial resources, and it has been a struggle for the team to raise the necessary funds.
However, they have worked hard, doing community work such as cutting grass and selling barbecue to raise money for the trip.
“The club, also wouldn’t have made it possible by the generous sponsorship of Polynesian Va’a-alo Outrigger Canoe Club, and the support of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association is a beacon of hope for our athletes,” said Wilson.
“The journey to Brisbane goes beyond just paddling. It offers the participants the chance to explore a new city and scenic locations.”
The team has departed the country, and they will be participating in the camp from January 18-31.
FIJI Hockey men’s head coach Shaun Corrie says they short of $40,000 of the budget for the Hockey5 World Cup tour to Oman.
Corrie said the team would have to travel with only the “bare minimum”, focusing on the essentials such as accommodation.
“With respect to the $40,000, if we don’t get that by the time we go, then we’re leaving with bare minimum, we won’t have any contingencies,” he said.
“We will need to restrict on things that we would like for the team and just make sure that we have the essentials.”
He adds, despite the financial setback, the team’s spirits were high, as they prepare to depart the country in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the players were treated to a potluck dinner and presented with sports gear by team management and family members on Thursday night.
