- By TALEI MATAIRAKULA

THE journey hasn’t been easy for Fiji Hockey but it’s men’s team are heading to the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman with a cleat and positive mindset.

Head coach Shaun Corrie who has been the backbone of the team’s aspiration acknowledged the challenges they overcame to reach the pinnacle of the sport and create history for small nation like Fiji.

The men’s team left for Oman yesterday and is set to play their first two pool matches on January 28.

“We have been preparing for a long time, for the men’s its going to be a long journey. We have to get there first, get over the jetlag, settle down and adapt to the weather. We only have about three days to acclimatize before the first match.

“We know that we are the lowest ranked country in our pool so, we just have to do our best and we have nothing to lose. That’s the stance that we are taking to this World Cup. The excitement hasn’t hit us yet, but I guess once we get there excitement will finally hit us,” Corrie stated.

“We are going with whatever we were able to collect in such a short span of time. We are playing the US first and then Oman as the last game on January 28.

“We are almost there, we are looking forward to it, we just want to acknowledge all the help that we have received so far and the blessings also that we got from the church and from the President during the i-Tatau. We are very passionate people, and we want to let the whole world know that Fiji exists.”

This is the first time that Fiji Hockey has qualified to the World Cup and would be making its debut appearance in Oman.
