Injured Fijiana players on verge of return, says coach

- By TALEI MATAIRAKULA

FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s head coach Saiasi Fuli is stressing the importance of establishing winning combinations in every match as the new HSBC SVNS Series format demands nothing less than winning performances from teams.

Some core players such as Sesenieli Donu, Laisani Likuceva and Heleina Young are still injured, allowing other players to force their way into the squad.

Fuli affirmed that while depth and competition for positions are vital, finding the right fit and combination is equally important.

“We have a good mixture here with experienced players in Ana Maria Naimasi, Raijeli Daveua, Reapi Uluinasau and young wing Meredani Qoro. The Nawaka girl (Qoro) started well last year before she got injured but she has recovered and did well to return to the squad for Perth.

“We are eagerly awaiting to see them showcase what we have been doing during the festive season and what they can execute on the ground,” he said.

They are complemented by players such as Elenoa Adi Naimata who is the least experienced in the team, having only played during the 2023 Toulouse 7s in France.

“Naimata, she played well in the Pacific Games.

“Verenaisi Bari comes back from a serious ACL injury suffered last year, she trained well during the off-season, did her rehab, and played in the Pacific Games and Coral Coast 7s where she managed to break into the 12-member squad.”

The Fijiana faces Brazil in its opening match today at 4pm before taking on Spain at 8.47pm.

Their last pool match is against France on Saturday at 2.22pm.

The side is fourth on the series standings with 24 points, 10 away from New Zealand and France drawn at 34 points.

Australia leads the standings with 40 points from two tournaments.

Meanwhile, in the men’s division, the Fiji 7s side will take on Samoa in its opener at 6.38pm before battling France at 11.31pm on Friday.

On Saturday, they will take on New Zealand at 5.25pm.
