Tuqiri says Super Rugby prep ‘gone up a level’

- By ANASILINI NATOGA

MEET Swire Shipping Fijian Drua prop Emosi Tuqiri, a 23-yearold rugby enthusiast from Namatakula, Nadroga whose love for the sport began at the age of six.

Growing up with the influence of his cousins, former Wallaby winger Lote Tuqiri and Noa Nadruku, both hailing from a village of rugby players, Emosi’s path in rugby seemed destined.

“I started my rugby career at the age of six, coming from a rugby background I didn’t have a choice,” he said.

Born in Brisbane, Emosi spent two years with the Melbourne Rebels and joined the Drua camp last year. Despite his city upbringing, he maintains strong connections with his roots, especially in Namatakula and Yaroi, Matuku, where his family’s rugby legacy began.

“Even though I was born in

Brisbane I have very many connections with my families here in Fiji since I always come home for Christmas,” Tuqiri said.

Through his father, Elia Tuqiri, a former police officer, Emosi brings discipline and resilience to the game.

“The boys’ preparation has gone up a level, and we are all excited for our first match against the Blues,” Tuqiri reflected on the upcoming season.

He says the boys are super fit.

“We’re fitter than ever,” he added.

Having been part of Fiji’s Rugby World Cup squad last year as injury cover, Emosi aims to secure a permanent spot this year in the Drua squad.

The big prop’s mission is to push hard in the scrum and create space for the backline.

“I want to push hard in the scrum, carry the ball well, and set up opportunities for our lightning backs to score,” he added.
