Drivers take care on our roads

- By ZIFIRAH VUNILEBA

THE cyclone season is upon us and with it, comes extreme weather conditions at times which can make driving a challenge.

Unfavorable weather conditions affect the road condition and ultimately, all road users.

In Fiji, drivers and pedestrians have been advised accordingly by relevant authorities to proceed with caution considering the change in weather.

Some of these authorities includes the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Fiji Meteorological Service, National Disaster Management Office, Fiji Roads Authority.

The Fiji Meteorological Service warned of heavy rain for all parts of Fiji.

Recently the Land Transport Authority LTA released a statement advising drivers to be aware of road conditions during this period. Acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said the chances of accidents increased due to slippery road conditions.

"As we are into the cyclone season, the LTA is encouraging everyone to minimise the risk of life-threatening situations on the roads," he said.

"Your safety and that of your household are paramount during adverse weather.

"Follow road safety rules, stay alert, be considerate and remain vigilant."

LTA road safety tips:

1. Slow down: Reduce your speed to suit the conditions. Wet roads can be slippery and increase your stopping distance.

2. Keep a safe distance: Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the car in front of you, as wet weather can increase the stopping distance.

3. Beware of hydroplaning: Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tires and the road surface. To avoid this, ensure your tires have good tread depth and drive smoothly and carefully on wet roads.

4. Be cautious at intersections: Wet weather reduces visibility, so take extra care when approaching intersections, and watch for other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

5. Keep your windows and windscreen clean: A dirty windscreen can reduce visibility even in dry weather, but in wet conditions, it can become a safety hazard. Keep your windows and windscreen clean and clear of debris.

6. Avoid driving through floodwaters: Never drive through floodwaters, as they can be deeper than they appear and can sweep your vehicle off the road.

If you must pass through a flooded area, take an alternative route.

7. Check your brakes: Check your brakes regularly, as wet weather can cause them to become less effective. If you notice any issues, have them checked immediately by a qualified mechanic.

8. Stay informed: Check weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out and be prepared to adjust your plans if necessary. If conditions worsen during your journey, find a safe place to pull over and wait until the weather improves.
