‘Juna’ relishes his unique role
WHILE the spotlight at the Perth 7s is primarily on the players on the field, Caesar Waqa Jr is relishing a unique and exciting experience as a ball boy during the tournament.
The 13-year-old, son of former Fiji Bati and Melbourne Storm winger Sisa Waqa, was enlisted for the role by his mother Pei Tuifagalele Waqa.
For Caesar, who has always harboured a passion for sport, this opportunity is a dream come true.
Rugby has been a longstanding tradition in his family, with his late grandfather, Etuate Waqa, having served as the former national 7s head coach.
Now, Caesar gets to be on the sidelines, immersing himself in the electrifying atmosphere of the 7s series, a field where his grandfather once guided the national team.
Affectionately known as Juna, he is no stranger to various sports, including soccer, AFL, rugby union, league, and touch rugby during the off-season.
Caesar attends Darling Range Sport College in Perth.
He got a scholarship to a Perth sports college for the rugby league program.
“I signed him up to be a ball boy knowing how he loves sports, during the year he plays, soccer, AFL, rugby union and league and off season he plays touch rugby,” proud mother Pei said.
Juna was on cloud nine when they got the news that he got a spot in the ball boy.
“At first when I told him that I had signed him up he first didn’t believe me because I’m always busy with work. When I got the confirmation email, he was so happy, keep hugging and thanking me.
“I took him to a few sessions for the ball boy information,” Pei added.
“He is enjoying it at the Perth 7s meeting teams, especially the Fiji team.”
His dad Sisa Waqa always trains him and his elder brother where they do gym work out and recovery,
Juna is not just witnessing the excitement of the tournament but also experiencing a unique connection to the rich rugby heritage within his family.
