Rewa 10s sets platform for scouting
PLAYERS had the opportunity to showcase their skills and talent in the Rewa Rugby Union 10s tournament held yesterday at Buckhurst Park in Laucala Bay, Suva.
New Rewa head coach and former Flying Fijians captain Ro Alifereti Doviverata was present at the tournament, taking notes of those that impressed on the field as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the Vodafone Vanua competition next month.
12 teams were part of the tournament, 10 were Rewa clubs and two were invitational clubs from Suva rugby.
“The aim of this tournament is to provide a platform for players especially in preparation for the Vanua competition. This is also an opportunity for the new Rewa head coach Ro Alifereti Doviverata to select his final squad for the Vanua competition,” said Uliano Kataiwai, the sports and events director for Rugby Development Fiji (RDF)
RDF oversees Rewa Rugby’s club competitions for this year.
“We just want to develop rugby in Rewa and one thing I saw in last week’s tournament that motivated me was the high number of talents in grassroots. This week maybe people are asking why we are having it in Suva, well unfortunately we were not able to secure any ground near the Rewa area because of the weather and, they are maintaining the grounds for the upcoming season and school is about to start.
“We also brought it to Suva just to give these players a chance to come and feel the atmosphere of playing in a better ground condition and up to standard facilities maintained by the Fiji Sports Council,” Kataiwai added.
Doviverata said he has identified some prospects, and the final names will be finalized today.
