Online platform soon for MSMEs
FIJI’S Ministry of Trade will soon unveil an online platform designed primarily for the benefit of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), according to Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica.
While officiating at the launch of Government’s newly designed “Business Now Fiji” website last week, Mr Kamikamica said the Coalition Government appreciates the contribution that MSMEs play in the growth of Fiji’s economy.
“The ministry is planning to unveil a groundbreaking platform in the near future, meticulously crafted to empower Fiji’s micro, small and medium enterprises, fostering their exponential growth by capitalising on lucrative opportunities within the expensive export markets,” he said.
“Your Government recognises the dynamic role that MSMEs play in shaping the economic landscape in Fiji, often referred to as the backbone of the economy.
“These enterprises significantly contribute to employment generation, poverty alleviation and local development. Their nimbleness and resilience not only drives economic growth, but also foster inclusivity.
“The ease of doing business project aims to further empower businesses in utilising e-commerce platforms and expanding their horizons.”
In an earlier interview, Mr Kamikamica said there are more than 30,000 MSMEs.
“In Fiji, there are about 30,000 registered MSMEs that account for approximately 82 per cent, if not more, of businesses in Fiji. This is a number far higher if we consider the informal business sector, or the informal operators.
“From a policy-making perspective, we are focused on economic diversification and we the MSMEs as a leading force in driving this agenda.
“That is why we are working on improving the business environment by commencing work on things like alternative financing such as crowdfunding and P2P (peer-to-peer) learning and we will be going to Cabinet as well over the next few months to provide a more comprehensive support for MSMEs.”
Business Assistance Fiji (BAF) will be hosting Fiji’s first-ever MSMEs conference from March 7-8, 2024.
