Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Koto

- By JOHN CHETTY

TEVITA Koto, a 17-year-old paddler from the Lami Paddling Club, has been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a two-week paddling camp in Brisbane, Australia, with 15 children from settlements in Lami.

“I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to attend the training camp in Shorncliffe,

Brisbane,” Koto said from Australia.

“This is truly a dream come true for me and my crew, and I am so grateful for the support and sponsorship provided by Poly Va’a and all the other sponsors who have made this experience possible for us.

“Paddling has been a huge part of my life for the past two years, and I have developed a deep passion for the sport.

“I am also involved in athletics and represent Dudley High School in various competitions. However, the opportunity to attend an international regatta and learn from experienced paddlers and coaches is something that I never thought I would have the chance to do at this stage in my paddling journey.

“I cannot express enough how thankful I am to Poly Va’a for hosting and sponsoring the Lami Fiji Paddlers camp. Your dedication to the development of young paddlers like me is truly inspiring, and I am honoured to be a part of this incredible opportunity,” said Koto.

“Without your generous support, I would never have been able to afford such an experience, and I know that it will not only impact me individually but also contribute to the growth and success of paddling as a sport in Fiji and the Pacific.”

The journey of getting to

Australia has not been easy, as funds were raised for passports and visas through multiple BBQ fundraisers each week.

“However, the support from Poly Va’a and all the sponsors has made it all worth it, and I am so grateful to everyone who has contributed to making this dream a reality for me and my fellow paddlers from Lami Paddling Club.”

The Lami Paddling Club will be returning to Fiji tomorrow.
